COACHELLA 2018 PLAYLISTS

For the 2018 season, I was again in charge of curating all of Coachella's official playlists. This time, with no official streaming partner (as of the time of this writing), I was able to build a more thorough playlisting strategy for Spotify. I also worked with Spotify to create a customized Coachella playlist feature that provided users with a playlist full of Coachella artists that was automatically generated based on their listening habits.

 
 

SPOTIFY PLAYLISTS: COACHELLA REFLECTIONS

This year, I was able to create a fully thought out concept for the Spotify playlist strategy. Wanting to do something different, I created a lineup playlist and five additional playlists that were themed to help inspire fans to reflect upon their Coachella experiences in advance of the show.

For the 2018 season, the Goldenvoice team created a website and promotional materials that focused on the individual fan's experience of the festival instead of massive crowds and performances from the artist's perspective. The website looked like someone's memory board, with cork textures, pins, polaroids, and more. So, I crafted a playlist strategy to fit in line with that aesthetic. I created polaroid frames, added images from our content archives, named them, and wrote descriptions that would craft a story and reflect on the Coachella experience.

The marketing and promotional campaign for these playlists is on-going and involves advertising, cross-promotions, PR, mobile messaging, mobile and web integrations, artist and influencer takeovers, and more.

2018 LINEUP PLAYLIST

It's finally Coachella season. The days are getting longer and nights are warmer, there seems to be something magic in the air. All the senses are heightened and anticipation for that weekend in April runs through your body like the chills from seeing your favorite band.

MADE IN THE SHADE 🕶⛱

The first half of the day is best soundtracked by relaxing tunes that will prepare you for whatever the sun brings. But be easy, because the sun is mighty. It’s like when you want to get to Coachella early to discover something new. A long day awaits, so stay cool and you'll be Made in the Shade 🕶⛱.

SONGS AND PALMS 🤘🏾🌴

Eventually it’s time to make moves and pick up the energy. Maybe it’s breakfast, maybe it’s a walk, a bike ride, or a long drive with all the windows down. Can you almost feel the desert wind that makes the trees move? We share something in common, dancing to all the Songs with Palms 🤘🏾🌴.

DAY WAVE ☀️💃🏻

There's nothing better than a carefree sunny day with the perfect playlist to match the mood. Make plans with friends because it’s never too early to dance. Like when you're feeling 10/10 and first get through the front gates, catch a vibe and ride the Day Wave ☀️💃🏻.

SUNDOWN SOUNDS ✌🏼🎶

Things change when the evening arrives. Dusk is a journey, not just a destination. These tunes made for twilight have enough energy to excite for the night. It’s like when the sun sets behind the mountains. Coolness revives every fan at the festival and it’s time for Sundown Sounds ✌🏼🎶.

NIGHTS AND LIGHTS 🔈✨

The moon is here with music distinctly for dancing. It’s like when you grab your friends and someone special, run into the crowds, and let it all go. Don’t worry about what you look like, or what your neighbor is doing. Focus on the sounds from the speakers, you’re ready for Nights and Lights 🔈✨.

 

SPOTIFY PLAYLISTS: CUSTOM COACHELLA PLAYLIST

We worked with Spotify to create a customized Spotify feature that allowed users to connect their Spotify account, and create a playlist full of Coachella artists based on their listening habits. Additionally, if the user came back to refresh their playlist at a later date, the recommendation engine would update based on their even more recent listening habits. 

This feature could be found on the Coachella website at https://www.coachella.com/playlists/ or on our mobile app on the playlist page. We promoted this feature via social media, mobile messaging, and cross-promotions with Spotify.

COACHELLA 2017 PLAYLISTS

For the 2017 season, I was in charge of curating all of Coachella's official playlists. On Spotify, I curated the main lineup playlist that grew by over 57,000 followers over the course of the year. For Apple Music, I curated a lineup playlist and seven 'Coachella Soundtrack' playlists that we promoted to fans with mobile messaging during the festival.

 
 

SPOTIFY LINEUP PLAYLIST

Because of our Apple Music sponsorship, I only curated one playlist on Spotify, the official lineup playlist.

It started with about 93,000 followers and ended the year with over 150,000. By working with artists over the course of the Coachella campaign to pin the playlist to their profiles, and by working with the team at Spotify to get the playlist favorable placement in search results and browsing sections, we were able to increase the followers by 57,000.

 

APPLE MUSIC PROFILE

I was responsible for building out Coachella's first Apple Music profile. In addition to the standard lineup playlist, I also created seven different 'Coachella Soundtrack' playlists which you can see below. These playlists were designed around the Coachella experience and included only music from artists playing the festival that year.

Then, using our geo-targeted messaging platform, I promoted these playlists to fans before and during the music festival based on their location and behavior. For example, everyone who was driving into the desert got the 'Rocking Out on the Ride In' playlist messaged to them. On Saturday morning, everyone in the desert got the 'Passing Time By The Pool' message. On the Monday after Coachella, everyone who had been present on an outside stage during sunset over the course of the weekend, got the 'Soothing Sunsets' playlist messaged to them so they could reminisce on the times they had.

 

GOLDENVOICE 2017/2018 PLAYLISTS

For the 2017 and 2018 season, I curated the main festival playlists for Coachella, Splash House, Panorama, FYF, Bumbershoot, Firefly, and Hangout. I created multi-playlist concepts for Coachella, Splash House, Panorama, and Bumbershoot. These playlists were promoted using the festival’s social and promotional channels.

 
 
 

VIBEWITHIT MOBILE APP

From 2013 to 2015 I designed and produced an app based on my Soundcloud curation. It peaked at over 25,000 downloads with over 1,000 monthly active users. The app used Soundcloud's API to surface playlists that I updated daily.

HOMEPAGE

The homepage consisted of three different charts of music that were compiled from all of the music I was adding to any playlist on the app. The user could select 'Recent' for the most recent additions, 'Most Played' for the songs with the most plays on Soundcloud, or 'Most Liked' for the songs with the most likes on Soundcloud.

They could also further narrow down the list by selecting one or more genres from the top left tab.

PLAYLISTS PAGE

The second page was a sortable list of all the playlists that I was curating from Soundcloud. This list could be sorted based on genre or situation.

I was curating over 50 different playlists based on a wide variety of genres in the electronic, hip hop, and indie rock varieties.

Opening a playlist lead the user to a page that looked very similar to the homepage except it had a header image and share buttons.

 
 
 

USER PLAYLISTS

As you can see there are two small buttons on each song tab. One to delete the song from the app (for that user only), and another to add to a playlist.

We gave users the ability to create their own playlists that lived locally on their phones. They could title them as they wanted, arrange the songs on them, and upload photos from their cameral rolls for the playlist images.

 

NOW PLAYING PAGE

At any time, a user could select the 'Now Playing' page to see an enlarged view of the track image pulled from Soundcloud. 

The user could select the 'i' icon to view the Soundcloud info on that song. The next icon would allow them to add the track to one of their playlists. The next icon allowed them to share it via socials, text, or email. The last icon would send the user to the purchase page for that song if the artist had input a purchase link.

SPOTIFY PROFILE

In 2016, I started building out my Spotify Profile. I currently have over 400 profile followers and over 20 playlists with a combined total of over 500 followers.

 
 

SPOTIFY PROFILE

My Spotify profile is built with the goal of helping people to discover new music. My playlists are split up by genre, and then within each genre, there's a time of day and mood. This allows users to select exactly what they're looking for. I also curate playlists for my favorite tracks of the year, albums of the year, and discoveries of the month.

On the playlists page of my website, I allow users and artists to browse the playlists and submit music to them.

I update these playlists almost every day.

VIBEWITHIT YOUTUBE CHANNEL

During my time curating music under the Vibewithit brand name between 2013 and 2016, I built a YouTube channel to almost 20k subscribers with over 4.7 million views and 12.2 million minutes of music heard. I contracted with artists to provide exposure for them across my channels and we split ad revenue making independent artists hundreds of dollars.

During my time curating music under the Vibewithit brand name between 2013 and 2016, I built a Soundcloud channel to more than 42k subscribers with over 3.9 million plays and over 200 uploads. I contracted with artists to provide exposure for them across my channel. I curated playlists on this channel for my mobile app as well.

 
 

SOUNDCLOUD PROFILE

It's been rebranded under my own name so I can continue reposting music and directing listeners to my Spotify profile. I only repost music that I personally like and I no longer focus on building followers on this channel.

2015 UPLOADS

2015 was the last year that I uploaded other artist's music to my channel. It was mostly electronic music.

 

SPLASH HOUSE Overview

Since 2014, I've been the number two man at Splash House music festival in Palm Springs, California. After the 2017 editions, I became the Assistant Producer under the founder of the festival. Since 2014, I've been a part of a 4 person team that curates and books the lineup.

ARTISt relations

Since 2015, I've been in charge of the entire artist relations operations for the festival. Before the show, I advanced over 80 artists, sorting transportation, credentials and festival passes, guest list, hotel accommodations, and working with our festival production manager and stage production managers to advance the gear and set up required for their performances.

On site, this job entailed managing a five person on-site artist relations team who dealt with the artists and their needs on the day of their performances. I also managed a two person artist hospitality team to stock green rooms and provide food and beverage to artists playing Lastly, I managed three drivers to provide transportation for all artists.

MArketing & Content

I work with the founder to build and execute a marketing plan that includes ad spends, brand collaborations, and PR efforts. We work with the head of Goldenvoice festival content to choose a style guide for the upcoming year's content, direct the photographers and videographers, and create compelling photo and video for social media.

PRODUCTION & PROGRAMS

While the founder takes the lead on all of the festival production responsibilities, finances, deal points, and conceptualizing the various stages, I assist and work through it alongside him. I took a larger role over past years in creating activities, building out a vendor market, hiring and managing lifeguards, and helping to find new creative directors and designers.

Since 2014, I've co-directed the lineup curation of the festival along with the founder and two Goldenvoice talent buyers.
